2018 BA Graduation

TheNEWtribes beginning : Embarking on my identity journey is a deeply personal and transformative experience. It’s a path that involves exploring how the language of my work embodies it and makes it physically visible for my target group and audience , beyond the roles we play or the expectations placed upon you by others. This journey begun for me with TheNEWtribe in my graduation year of 2018, with self-reflection, where i took the time to question how identity is shaped, what could already exist in your heritage, and what my mind psychology through adoption create to give me the idea of belonging.

On the start of my journey in 2018, there was still the idea of finding clarity or a form of understanding to box my identity. I a need of controle. Through the process of my graduation work it became very clear that there is no real clarity in my identity, because besides measurable things as environment or DNA that can determine certain things about you, my mind has been waving and filling in gaps. Creating whole surrealistic worlds that now are part of my reality and my identity how i see me and my Truth.

This is became my starting role as an Artist to explore that world, translate it into art, Inspire and educate my audience. This collection plays with a range of techniques, materials and aesthetics, attempting to find connections and relations between Western and Ethiopian culture. My work speaks directly to those I considers a part of my own identity. It is a certain group of people I came in contact with – youth of mixed descent, who fled with their families from their country of origin, or were adopted. I focuses on this group, because despite the difference in backgrounds and upbringing, they share and agree on many topics when it comes to identity. I think closing the gaps between those worlds.
